Yesterday we “officially” wrapped up GAPS intro. I say “officially” because we’re planning on adding in non-intro foods one at a time, rather than all at once, so it will probably still feel like we’re on intro for a little while. Nevertheless, we made it through!
In total we spent thirteen days on intro. In case you’re wondering, yes, that is a short intro. I would guess a more typical duration to be around a month. Thirteen days was what we were up for, though, and I really do think that even our short intro was worth it. If nothing else, it got us to drink a LOT more broth than we normally do, probably around four to six cups a day rather than our normal one cup.
I was not initially sold on the idea of a short intro. My tendency is to be very black and white about things. If I’m going to do something, I want to do it perfectly. I’m working on changing this mindset, though, because I’ve come to realize that, particularly when it comes to your health, doing something is nearly always better than doing nothing. Neither Jesse nor I felt capable of undertaking a month-long intro, but doing a quicker version was within our reach. We may not have derived quite as much benefit as we would have from doing a longer intro, but I believe that any time spent on intro is better than no time on intro, so in the end I believe we came out ahead.
How We Fared on Intro
Both Jesse and I came through intro quite well. I think the second week was a lot easier than the first week. At some point I fell into a sort of groove with all the soup and didn’t mind the monotony so much. For some reason, just the fact that I knew I could have some avocado if I wanted to made everything much better. Jesse’s also been happier since he added in nut butter pancakes. He loves those pancakes and eats them at least twice a day. J
Aside from feeling more tired than usual, I didn’t really notice any new symptoms while on intro. I did get a few breakouts during the second week, but I think that may have had more to do with hormonal issues than anything else. My skin was looking quite good prior to and during the first few days of intro so I hope it can return to that condition soon.
I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I’m thinking of trying to transition off of GAPS sometime in the near future. I’m not really sure when that will be. Since we just finished intro, it seems like it would make sense to stay on for at least another month or two and maybe longer.
I’m honestly trying not to get too invested in the idea of going off GAPS because I realize it may not be up to me. After all, it’s possible that I may try some non-GAPS food and find that I can’t tolerate it at all, which to me would be a sign that I need to spend additional time on GAPS. It’s easy to get excited about the idea of non-GAPS foods, but I’m trying to temper my enthusiasm for now.
To try to maximize the benefit we receive from our next few months on GAPS, Jesse thought it would be a good idea to ramp up our detoxifying efforts. So, we’re planning on being more mindful of taking regular detox baths and trying to keep up the habit of juicing that we began towards the end of intro. Jesse’s been making juice for us, which has been great because I absolutely loathe juicing. I also think it would be a good idea to try to drink more broth than we normally do. I don’t think I can commit to making as much broth as we’ve had while on intro, but at least two cups a day would probably be a better goal than our normal one cup.
Advice for Anyone Thinking of Trying Intro
Last time I shared a few bits of advice that I found helpful while on intro. This second week made me think of a couple more useful tidbits. If you’re thinking of going on intro, keep these in mind:
If possible, leave flexibility for unscheduled trips to the grocery store. I normally only grocery shop on Wednesdays. When eating our normal GAPS diet, I’m pretty good at buying the right amount of veggies for the week. While on intro, however, I found myself making more trips to the store because it was difficult to predict how many vegetables we would need. Since Jesse and I share a car I can’t just run to the store whenever I feel like it, so it was helpful to remember that I might need to schedule extra shopping trips while on intro.
Remove any unnecessary foods from your fridge. My GAPS fridge is nearly always well-stocked with food, but going on intro has caused it to fill nearly to bursting. All that broth, meat, leftover soups and veggies take up a lot of space! Finding room for everything has been frustrating at times. If possible, I highly recommend removing anything you don’t need from your fridge prior to starting intro.
