Things I Loved in May

Things I loved in MayMay has been a pretty great month. Here’s what’s been making me happy at home this month:

Finally enjoying some consistently warm weather after our very cold and snowy April.

Experimenting with some recipes for my upcoming e-book. Pineapple coconut ice cream is a definite winner!

Picking up our first local pastured chicken and local organic veggies of the season. The chicken, in particular has been a very welcome change. It tastes so much better than the organic chicken I had been buying at the health food store.

Starting our Hypnobabies class, in preparation for having our first baby at the end of August.

Seeing our green beans come up in the garden, plus watching the lettuce and sugar snap peas grow by leaps and bounds.

Making several batches of my homemade Cheez-its–and then consistently feeling happy about how tasty they are.

Making a super delicious recipe for apple clove muffins out of Empowered Sustenance’s grain-free e-book Indulge and Heal. Probably one of the best coconut flour recipes I’ve ever had.

Finally getting around to trying a Coobie bra–and falling totally in love with it. And then ordering two more. 🙂

Making your own homemade vanilla extract isn’t hard, and it saves you a lot of money. The Creative Simple Life shares her tutorial.

Yummy Inspirations had a great post on 40 ideas for healthy kids snacks. Most of these would be good for adults, too!

If you’ve been considering making your own sunscreen, you should definitely check out the Homemade Mommy’s recipe for homemade sunscreen lotion bars. These are good for your skin and non-toxic–plus they’re easy to take on the go. 

Egg labels are pretty confusing when you’re new to real food, so I loved this post from the Sprouting Seed on which types of eggs are really the healthiest eggs–and which kinds you should ideally avoid.

Making your own homemade chocolate means that you have complete control over all of your ingredients. Healy Real Food Vegetarian shares her easy and tasty recipe.

Do you eat fermented foods? If not, I’d recommend trying to get them into your diet. This post from Cheeseslave shares eight reasons for eating fermented foods.

Thank Your Body explains why vegetable oils are unhealthy. (With the exception of olive oil and coconut oil, of course!) This is a great post on why you should avoid industrial oils and instead stick to traditional fats like butter, lard, and coconut oil.

    Was it you who did the Joder Farms CSA last year? Aren’t their chickens HUGE?! 🙂

    • Yeah, Jodar Farms this year and last year. I don’t remember the chickens last year being that big…but this first month’s pickup was definitely huge! Apparently they couldn’t slaughter because of all the snow, so the chickens got a lot bigger than usual. I roasted one yesterday and it wouldn’t fit in the pan I usually use.

        We did it this year based on your recommendation. I had gotten some hens from our dairy farm to last us a few months before the chicken CSA started and they were only in the 2- to 3-lb range. I was kind of shocked when we picked our Jodar chickens up, but it was a good shock. 🙂

        • Haha–yes, a good shock! They are not usually that large. But probably larger than you are used to; maybe 4 lbs. usually?

            That’s about the size of the ones we were getting through Grant Farms, I think. 🙂 The ones from the dairy were smaller because they didn’t grow well for some reason. Definitely makes for lots of extra meat to freeze which is always a good thing! Thanks for recommending it!
