Real Food Link Love: September 2012

I love hearing about other people’s favorite posts from around the real food blogosphere. Although I read quite a few blogs, it seems like there’s always so much going on that it’s just impossible to keep up with everything on my own! In that vein, today I want to share a few great posts that I appreciated during September.

I always enjoy reading other people’s thoughts on reusable menstrual products, so I loved Courtney’s post on why she loves her Mooncup.…

How to Make Lactose-Free Yogurt in Your Dehydrator

There are many different ways to make yogurt. As long as you fulfill a few conditions, how you want to actually implement the process is largely up to you.  Today I want to share my favorite method: making yogurt in my dehydrator. Although making yogurt is one of those things that can seem really intimidating (it was for me, at least!), once you get the hang of it it’s really a simple process.

This recipe is specifically for “GAPS yogurt.” All that means is that the yogurt is fermented for twenty-four hours in order to give the bacteria enough time to consume all of the lactose in the milk.…

Grass-fed Cinnamon Butter Fat Bombs

Easy fat bombs recipe | Cinnamon fat bombs | Grass-fed butter fat bombs | Healthy fat bombs

Are you getting enough grass-fed butter in your diet? Grass-fed butter is a nutritional powerhouse, and unless you have a dairy allergy, I think you should be including it in your diet everyday.

(Experienced real foodies know what I’m talking about, but if you’re new to real food you should check out this post on why butter is good for you.)

Not all of my meals lend themselves to being topped with butter, so I’ve developed a few candy-like recipes that make it easy to add some butter to the end of a meal or snack.

One of my favorites is these cinnamon butter fat bombs.…

Four Month Container Garden Update

It’s been a long time since my last container garden update. I originally planned to do a three month update, but I lost track of time and upon reflection decided that I might as well just wait until four months had passed. As you can see in the picture above, for the most part my garden is still going strong.

Basil

Planting a lot of basil plants was definitely a good decision. We’ve made four batches of pesto and eaten many meals involving basil in other forms (including a lot of hake with awesome). There’s still quite a bit of basil left right now so I anticipate we’ll also be able to preserve some more before the end of the season.…

Fresh Tomato, Basil, and Garlic Sauce

Fresh Tomato Basil Garlic Sauce | Raw Tomato Sauce | Fresh Tomato Sauce | Tomato Basil Sauce

Fresh tomato, basil and garlic sauce is one of our all-time favorite recipes. Fresh tomatoes and basil are one of the BEST parts of summer, and they really shine in this simple recipe.

In fact, Jesse and I love this recipe so much that we now just call it “awesome” for short! Fresh tomato, basil and garlic sauce IS a bit of a mouthful, after all. 🙂

Recipe Notes:

If you want this sauce to really shine, be sure to make it with flavorful, in-season ingredients. While technically you can find all of these foods at grocery stores year-round, the results are truly divine when you use farm-fresh/homegrown tomatoes and basil.…
