Things I Loved in August

Things I Loved in August-minHello! I hope you’re enjoying the last few weeks of summer. It’s time again for my recap of the last month.

The big news this month is that Keira turned 3! I can’t believe my baby is now three years old. We had a couple of little family parties and she is thoroughly enjoying all her new birthday toys. 🙂 So far three is proving equal parts awesome and very challenging.Keira in Halfway-min

We also took a trip to visit Jesse’s family in the Pacific Northwest. That was really fun, (aside from the part about me sleeping even worse than I do at home). Keira got to go to the zoo for the first time, and we also went to Halfway, OR to go to the wedding of a couple of friends. On the way back to Portland we also stopped for a quick visit at Whitman College, where Jesse and I went to college. We hadn’t been back since we graduated in 2008, so it was really great to walk around the campus again.Keira eating green beans-min

My garden has been a bit of a disappointment during this tail end of summer. My zucchini plants all have terrible powdery mildew and have pretty much stopped producing zucchini. Maybe I’m still not used to gardening in this climate, but it just doesn’t seem like August without a giant influx of zucchini from the garden. (I even bought some at the farmers market, since there just hasn’t been enough yet this year!) My tomatoes are also being eaten by some sort of pest, but I don’t have the energy to figure out what it is and how to stop it. So…better luck next year with the tomatoes. We have been getting some, for sure, but it could’ve been much more.

Updates from the Blog

I haven’t written many new posts lately, due to traveling and then working on behind the scenes stuff rather than writing new posts. But be sure to go check out the one post I did get written:

Peanut Butter Coconut Oil Fudge: This is a peanut buttery twist on my original coconut oil fudge. If you like coconut oil, chocolate, and peanut butter, you should give it a try!

Posts I Enjoyed from Around the Real Food Blogosphere

Are you still getting lots of zucchini from your garden? Or from friends? (Or are you maybe–like me–actually buying it?) Healthy Green Savvy has 50 zucchini recipes that you’ll want to check out. I really need to try some of these myself.

Healthy Green Savvy also has an excellent post on dehydrating food. If you’re interested in getting started with dehydrating, go read her post now. I should really be doing some of this myself this summer…

Are you a pickles fan? Go check out Good Mama Gracie’s recipe for naturally fermented garlic dill pickles.

Pure Living Space has a good tip on seasoning soups and vegetables. I should really try this more. Go check it out.

Do you like rhubarb? Did you know that it has health benefits, too? Thyme to Embrace Herbs has an interesting post on the nutritional benefits of rhubarb.

That’s it for now! How was your August? Tell me in the comments!
